It’s one of the few projects not to involve Miyazaki or Takahata and was instead directed by Tomomi Mochizuki. In a way, Ocean Waves was a big test for some of the younger staff at Studio Ghibli. Years later, when Taku reunites with most of his classmates, he learns that Rikako has also returned and wants to find her. After her plan falters, she becomes instantly distant with everyone at school, including Taku, whom she gets into a fight with. In the process, she involves Taku in her plans, borrowing some of his money and asking him to pose as her boyfriend. As a city kid, she struggles to adjust to her new life in the countryside after her parents’ divorce and decides to return to the city. Her name is Rikako Muto, and she’s become an instant hit with the school, drawing both the ire and attention of boys and girls alike. The film follows close friends Taku Morisaki and Yutaka Matsuno who meet a new transfer student from Tokyo. Ocean Waves is about the difference between a young adult about to start working and a high schooler still trying to figure things out. The characters bring that experience back to the present by comparing how it has affected their current selves. Both are about adults reflecting on their past youth and reevaluating their choices or mistakes made by them. This is a core theme of Studio Ghibli’s 1993 TV film Ocean Waves and goes to show that your nostalgic feelings never leave you because they’re a part of your daily growth.īased on Saeko Himuro’s 1990-1992 eponymous serial novel, the film is a coming-of-age teen romance story with slice-of-life elements similar to Isao Takahata’s 1991 feature Only Yesterday. This nostalgic feeling always lingers as they get older and is reinforced when they revisit familiar places with someone they knew. People always look back at their school days as a simpler experience and an important phase of their life. High school is often portrayed as a complicated experience for adults.

Thus, on many levels, Newtons actual incarceration meant a figurative social death more than his possible execution would mean literal physical death. His imprisonment permanently determined the nations interpretation and meaning of him, just as Malcolm Xs assassination had forever cemented his identity and achievements as they existed in 1963. The significant but subtle implication of Huey Newtons newfound position as the shared plight of the black race was the forfeiture of his individual will as this symbol, Newton became a fixed icon for the party. Hueys imprisonment was everyones plight the fight for his freedom was their own struggle for liberty. Hueys immediate condition was equated with the ultimate fate of the black community, and Formans inflammatory vow that Brother Huey must be set free or else the sky is the limit! demonstrated that blacks had accepted Hueys status as an indicator of their own oppression. Carmichael announced that Huey Newton was part and parcel of black people wherever we are on the world, removing Newtons specific identity and encouraging the audience to view him as not just the symbol of the movement, but its very essence. Rap Brown, three prominent members of SNCC, spoke about the great sacrifices that Newton was making for black people everywhere, thus reinforcing the idea that he had come to personify the troubles of an entire race. Newton and the Free Huey slogan were emblazoned on flags, buttons, t-shirts, and posters through heavy marketing this propaganda became as popular among white radicals as antiwar buttons with peace signs. The hype of the Free Huey movement perhaps was represented best at the Oakland rally held in his honor on February 17, 1968, where the merger with SNCC was announced. But the people go on in them lies the possibility for immortalitysince each man eventually gives up his life, death can only be controlled through the ongoing life of the people. With his new status as a national icon, Newton had been handed the opportunity to promote the Black Panther platform, to use his incarceration a continual reminder to the outside world of the outrageous tactics of the police. In his opinion, every day they kept me there I grew as a symbol of the brutalization of the poor and Black as well as a living reproach to societys indifference to the inequities of the legal system. To Newton, the immediate publicity opportunities for the party outweighed the prospect of severe legal consequences for himself.Īs Huey remained behind bars, coolly embodying resistance to injustice, the leadership of the party rallied the radical community around his image, temporarily uniting with SNCC as well as forming an uneasy coalition with PFP. My life had to come to an end sometime, he rationalized. As Cleaver and the party made the decision to use Newtons case as the cause celebr of the Black Panthers, recognizing that a potential black martyr could galvanize young blacks of all persuasions, in a way that they couldnt be otherwise, Newton remained calmly in jail, seemingly unruffled by the prospect of his trial, conviction, and possible execution. Newton, for his part, more than willingly accepted the role of revolutionary exemplar thrust upon him. Meanwhile, a confused and angry officer tried to block the photographers shot.Įldridge Cleaver further framed the incident as an example of the Panthers refusal to be intimidated in his words, Huey Newton had dealt with transgression of the territorial integrity of the Black community in a necessary way. His actions and attitude were to be emulated, not condemned. Reports trickled out that police had handled the arrest of a badly injured Newton with excessive force a widely distributed photograph displayed him shackled to a hospital gurney so that his stomach wound was tensed and contracted, obviously worsening his pain. Yet for the Panthers, the incident was a validation of sorts, a proof that their complaints of police brutality were warranted. For the national media, the Panthers potential for violence merited no further debatethe question had been resolved with the worst possible outcome, the death of a police officer. What mattered most were the ways in which the import of the shooting and Hueys arrest for the death of Officer Frey were manipulated by the press and the Panthers. The actual events of that evenings confrontation were never established definitively beyond the physical evidence for all effective purposes they were negligible. On October 28th, 1967, the prophecy of violence was realized in a battle of gunplay between Huey Newton and the Oakland Police Department that left Officer John Frey dead, Officer Herbert Heanes shot several times, and Newton wounded in the stomach. The name G-Shock comes from the term "gravitational shock," and it seems to refer to the field of mechanics in which shock is measured in the unit g. In those Japanese facilities is where R&D happens - and where G-Shocks are tested. While the original G-Shock concept was for the watch to be able to withstand any fall the wearer him- or herself would survive, its technology and durability have since evolved far beyond that.īasic G-Shock models are made in China, Thailand and Japan, while the higher-end and special models are fully Japanese-made. Brand lore tells of its now-celebrity creator Kikuo Ibe dropping watches out of windows during development of the first models. That includes the brand's own laboratory-like testing facilities, amusingly brutal trials on Japanese TV and a GP staffer once running one over with his car. G-Shocks will be subject to abuse like few other watches. How Tough Are G-Shocks, and How Are They Tested? What unites these seemingly disparate G-Shock communities is that all wrap their imaginations around these watches, and all demand unparalleled durability, functionality and style. Herein lies the dilemma of parsing the G-Shock collection: it appeals equally to a camouflage-clad soldier serving overseas as it does to the effete watchnerd in a New York City apartment or a 13-year-old anime junky in Tokyo’s suburbs. Two very different audiences, two very different watches. Also, the DW-6900-PT1 sold out almost immediately and is inevitably bound for nerd forums and e Bay, where it'll go for multiples of the original price. The second is the powder-blue, $180 limited-edition DW-6900-PT1 collaboration with Hodinkee and musician John Mayer: it appears playful but is, like all G-Shocks, tough as nails. The first is the $800 Mudmaster from the Master of G series, an enormous battle-ready analog/digital hybrid badass with almost as much capability as your smartphone. Let’s contemplate the following two G-Shocks, just to get a taste of the breadth available. DoorDash clearly gets this and has embedded this ethos in everything they do at the company. However when you do so, you need to be maniacal about squeezing every last drop of efficiency out of your platform: every 1% improvement in margins could mean a 20%, 30% or even 50% profitability increase and the difference between life (for you) and death (for your competitors). Flying low to the ground (i.e., sacrificing higher margins in order to share more value back to your customers and suppliers) is a great recipe for success in highly competitive markets like e-commerce and on-demand services. If you're going to fly low to the ground, you also need to operate at the lowest level of detail. If you're going to play the winner-take-all game, you need to be willing to go all-in when others blink.Ģ. DoorDash benefitted immensely from their competitors' relative difficulties accessing capital post-2016, and was willing to sacrifice enormous dilution to outlast them. That said, it's almost impossible to predict in advance how much time and capital it will take to get there, let alone any one company's odds of success. DoorDash may now be on a similar trajectory in the US. But, since 2018 China's Meituan appears to be doing just that, all while operating in an even more competitive environment than Uber. The end-state that Uber (and its global peers) spent the past decade chasing - that eventually it would outrun its competitors, tip entire markets in their favor, add multiple product lines and turn massively cashflow positive - has thus far proved elusive, leading many to believe that any such undertaking is a false dream.Sometimes winner-take-all markets DO tip. Is this the dawn of the next great Amazon-like story, or is the company simply benefiting from temporary tailwinds due to the pandemic? As always, we dive DEEP to find out. From Sand Hill darling during their Series A and B fundraises to all but left-for-dead during the great unicorn massacre of 2015/16, DoorDash has clawed their way back from the brink and emerged as America's dominant meal delivery service, and its only unit-economic positive standalone logistics player. Live from the scene of its blockbuster IPO, we recount the crazy, roller coaster journey of this "Palo Alto delivery company". lot more action goes on then we realize sometimes. The Complete History and Strategy of DoorDash it i park somewhere a bit busier it gets only like 8 hours and thats with a big chip in it. if i park on a dead road it gets about 2 days of files. the chip will also start to overwrite files if you left it for a long time but were able to get it to keep recording in park mode so theoretically you probably wouldn't have the video of whatever happened to your truck while your away on the chip anyways. on my 350 and the one before it with dual batteries it has never even come close to draining anything so i personally would never waste my money on a battery pack for it. on my wife's hybrid where it doesn't run the motor much so it never charges the battery up fully, it makes a difference and we use a battery pack. the camera will only record 2 days after you park it. i have those maxed out and i have never hit the voltage limit but you can't do anything about the 48 hour limit. You can set a voltage cutoff as low as like 11.6 and you can set a time period cutoff as long as 48 hours. i picked think ware because its supposed to work better with mac computers, if your not a mac guy then blackvue is the competitor i would also look at. the f800 is also a great camera from think ware that is a bit cheaper i would also recommend. the rear cam wire i went up through the headliner and to the back window behind the driver so the slider doesn't interfere. i routed the power wire across the headliner and down the passenger side post to the fuse box with a couple add-a-fuse's to tap into battery and switched power super easy. this camera uses very little power so i wouldn't worry about using it on the obd2 port but with everyone trying to use the obd2 port you will end up having to get a splitter most likely later on. starts recording within 5 seconds of turning on the truck and videos download at least twice as quick as other models i have had. i replaced that with a good one and now works perfect. having a good memory card is key because it write so much data so fast i got one card that went to shit and couldn't t write fast enough so it was skipping time in videos. you don't notice a difference between it and a 1080p camera through your phone but when you download videos onto your computer you can zoom more. I have the U1000 in my 21 i had other models in previous trucks. Since it’s going to be filled with dirt, I think that will work. In the video, they use an electric nail gun to attach these, but I don’t have one of those, so I used wood glue. I then cut some of the leftover wood to place across the ledge for the floor of the box. I replaced the too-long board with a different board and everything was attached without a problem. After taking a break, I realized I could just take the ill-fitting box apart and attach each side inside the legs individually. The boards were slightly wonky and one side was just a hair too long. When I tried to slide the bottom box inside the legs, it did not fit. After both boxes were made, I formed the legs and fitted the top box inside the legs and screwed it together. Per instructions in the video, I built two basic boxes, one of which had a ledge on the long sides to hold the bottom slats, making attachments with 1 1/4 inch deck screws and a bit of wood glue. I also had the boards cut at the store because I do not own a chop saw. I chose pine for cost reasons and because I plan to paint the exterior of the box. Most projects recommend buying cedar or cedar fencing because it wears well outside. (Again, there will leftovers.) Finally, you need two 1-by-2 by 8 foot boards for the ledge that holds up the floor slats and the decorative trim on the box. You also need three 1-by-4 inch by 8 foot boards cut into 30 inch pieces for the legs. The remainder of the lumber is used for the floor of the box. (The V-style leg.) To build the box, you need four 1-by-6 by 8 foot boards, each of which is cut to give you one piece 36 inches long and one piece 16 1/2 inches long. It’s a basic box with a ledge inside to support the floor of the box and legs made out of two 1-by-4 inch boards each. My building skill level is low to moderate and I do not have a ton of power tools, but I’ve built enough boxes to know roughly how to do it.Īfter checking out a lot of videos (see the links at the bottom of the post), I chose the project below. I want to add two raised beds on legs to my patio for looks as well as rabbit protection. Others use wood for the bottom, which is heavier but sturdier and less likely to rupture. On top of that, landscape fabric is installed. Several builders recommend adding a few cross boards on the bottom and then attaching quarter-inch hardware cloth to the bottom. What the bottom of the box is made of also varies. Some folks create a frame that’s attached to the posts while others just attach the side boards to the posts. The other type involves using a sturdy post, such as a 4-by-4 or a 2-by-3, in each corner and building the box around it. The legs give the bed a more finished look. Some DIYers use two boards (1-by-4s, for example) to form a V-shape and then attach the side panels of the box inside the V-shaped legs. You can follow the tutorials or let them inspire your own designs.Raised beds on legs seem to fall into two styles, based on the style of leg. With some basic tools and a weekend afternoon or two, you can create these raised bed gardens for your own back yard. We’ve rounded up a few simple raised bed garden ideas that don’t require a degree in engineering to create. Vertical growing towers, window boxes, and wall planters also provide planting space for you to grow anything from lettuce and herbs to violas and petunias. If you don’t have room for traditional raised beds in your yard, there are many variations of the idea that work for compact spaces such as a petite patio, deck, or balcony. And a DIY design lets you make it as simple or complex as you like, ready to fit in better in your particular yard. But many designs can be DIY’ed for less using up-cycled or repurposed materials or even with basic lumber from the hardware store. There are tons of raised bed garden kits you can purchase and assemble yourself. And bonus: They are easy to fence in, keeping your precious plants away from hungry garden visitor such as rabbits! Raised beds also warm up faster than garden beds, which is ideal if you live in a cold climate and want to maximize your number of growing days per year. If your soil is sandy or mostly heavy clay, raised beds, which are filled with exactly the soil mixture you want, make planting a breeze. You can build them high off the ground to save your knees or back. They make marking the space between your lawn and garden very simple, and make plowing up the soil unnecessary. Raised garden beds and planters can solve a number problems. If you're looking to put a small garden into your yard or near your house to grow veggies and fruits or different types of flowers, it's worth considering a raised bed. Polar bears, they pointed out, often go up to a month without finding anything to eat and can ill afford to waste precious calories paddling away from people, even if those people only want to share pictures of them on Facebook.īut I’m not sure we had a choice. There were people on the cruise-a minority, to be sure-who later criticized the decision to follow them. I think that’s why we kept getting closer and closer even as they tried to swim away, crossing a cove and scrambling up a cliff. In it, the author recounts how a sort of acquisitive mania overtook his fellow passengers when they spotted their first polar bears, after two weeks at sea without encountering any: 27, with its passengers disembarking in groups of 150 at a time. The Crystal Serenity is scheduled to dock there on Saturday, Aug. National Geographic notes that the Inuit community of Ulukhaktok, Canada, has spent the past two years holding town meetings and training sessions in preparation for the arrival of a cruise ship whose population is four times that of the town itself. government that is scrambling to accommodate these wealthy tourists’ whims. While Crystal says it treats its sewage and avoids dumping it close to shore, it was one of four cruise lines to receive a failing grade in that 2014 report. In addition to their exorbitant per-capita carbon emissions, commercial cruise ships dump 1 billion gallons of sewage into the sea each year, according to a 2014 study by the nonprofit Friends of Earth. Harder to prepare for is the possibility of a fuel spill like the one that ensued when a tourist cruise ship sank off the coast of Antarctica in 2007, poisoning the nearby penguin mating grounds.īut even cruise ships that don’t crash can still befoul the world around them.
